People seem to have a love-hate relationship with Harbor Freight, and it mostly seems that they love to hate the purveyor of discount tools. While [Charles] found the stock motor controller somewhat anemic, the real buried treasure in the tool is a huge brushless motor, powerful enough to “Throw an 8-inch Vise Grip at you” during a locked rotor test. The whole teardown is enlightening as to the engineering decisions that go into mass-market tools, so even if you can’t think of something to do with this motor, the article is worth a read. At $169 for the Lynxx it’s a little pricey to buy just to harvest parts, but it wouldn’t be the first HF tool to suffer that fate.

I got my Harbor Freight catalog for February the other day and spotted the new Atlas OPE lineup featuring a dual voltage 40V / 80V battery and several outdoor tools. In addition Harbor Freight has a separate landing page on their website for the Atlas OPE tools and shows 2 other tools which appear to be 40v, including a hedge trimmer and a pole saw, although it’s not listed if they’re brushless or not and there’s no other info at this time. This leads me to believe they’ll be rolling out a dedicated line of 40v tools that can use the dual voltage battery much like the DeWalt FlexVolt or the Hitachi/Metabo HPT/Hikoki Multivolt, except these are the first OPE tools I’ve seen to use this technology.
