I cook using oak wood. Oak is not a favorite of this device. The first time I tried to divide a piece, the piece merely bounced off the splitter and into the air. To sharpen the blade of the splitter, I pulled out my grinder and did so. This was somewhat helpful. It is most dependable to take a hand axe and strike the end of the wood with it in order to create a groove in the wood.
