I’ll admit that I’m wrong. A few years ago, when I was working on a home in the early 1970s, I didn’t realize that “impact drivers” were so good at getting screws into and out of things quickly. There were hand drills that I had been using, and they worked. I thought that was it.

During two hurricanes that hit Oahu at the same time, I noticed how much easier it was to board up the windows with 2x4s and plywood when I used an impact driver, which all the “helpers” I hired had with them. They found out a big part of the time drills go into the ground, while impact drivers go into and remove screws. In my mind, I thought that I had all the tools I needed to do this. Not at all.

The best thing about using an impact driver is that it doesn’t twist your wrist like a drill does. Because the hammer blows are so quick, the impact driver doesn’t twist your wrist. People don’t always need to use a lot of force to keep a screw from getting stripped. To make things even better, I’ve switched to torx-head screws and stopped using phillips-head screws. With large torx-head screws and an impact driver, one gains a new superpower.

There are so many different kinds out there, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on one because I’ll only use it once in a while. In fact, when I first looked at Amazon, I saw that they had a no-name impact driver with a battery and charger for under $40. That was probably a great deal, but it doesn’t seem to be available now. It turns out that this impact driver has the right specs for the job, and the spare batteries are easy to get from third parties. Why not get both. Because the combo costs only $10 more than the impact driver on its own, it is a good deal. . The drill that comes with this combo is pretty basic. It has fewer clutch settings, is lighter in weight, and only has one speed (but you can change it with the trigger). It’s not as good as the B&D 18v NiCad tools that I already own. . If you want to run 18-volt tools off of lithium batteries, you can buy an adapter plate on eBay. I don’t think there’s a lot of need for this. The difference between 18 and 20 volts is not only very small numerically, but the 20 volt lithium batteries run at about 18 volts when they’re being used. (Lithium is a little lighter and a little more likely to start a fire, but that’s about the same to me..

Anyway, the storm that just happened is over now, so I went outside to take down some boards that were blocking access doors. The impact driver was a lot of fun to work with. Great screws came right out of wood that was very hard to get out with almost no work. Where have I been all these years.

Note that the “charger” that comes with the combo isn’t very powerful. I think it’s only about a fifth of an amp. It will take a long time to recharge a battery that’s been used up. I’ve bought a fast charger and two 4ah batteries from a third-party company. Even though one doesn’t have to do that, the slow charger works fine if you don’t mind “slow.” It’s likely better for your battery. I don’t want it to take a whole day to recharge each of the bigger batteries. It might be just a “guy thing..

As I use this more, I’ll give it more stars. The first thing I thought was “cool” was that it worked like the more expensive ones do. It doesn’t get the last star because it doesn’t feel as good in my hand as the $200 ones I’ve tried.

no, I don’t have one.
