Description of the Produc.

Designed for use in high-production industrial environments where dust extraction is required, 3M Elite Random Orbital Sanders deliver professional-quality dust-free performance and a swirl-free finish, hour after hour, without the use of a vacuum.

The Manufacturer’s Statemen.

Abrasives from 3M are designed to perform optimally when used in conjunction with 3M Elite Random Orbital Sanders, which are the best of their kind in their class. Built with powerful, precision-balanced air-driven motors and a durable, lightweight aluminum housing, these ergonomically designed workhorses can withstand the rigors of industrial production while also reducing user fatigue for hours on end of comfortable operation and operation. Exceptional central-vacuum-capable sanders can be used with a central vacuum system or with an external portable vacuum, such as a shop vacuum. With a threaded attachment feature, it is simple and secure to attach a 1″ external threaded vacuum hose (sold separately) to the workpiece and the surrounding area, effectively eliminating dust from the workpiece and surrounding space.

High-performance, ergonomically superior desig.

Operator-friendly features such as central-vacuum readiness and ergonomic design make 3M Elite Random Orbital Sanders an excellent choice for high-volume production environments.

Support for the wrists and hand.

The use of an extended curved wrist rest reduces stress on the hand and wrist while also providing extra leverage.

Pinch and pressure points on the operator’s palm are eliminated by using a recessed lever platform.

Operator preference can be accommodated by three different grip sizes. The tool has a grip diameter of 2-3/4″ and two additional grip sizes are available (diameters of 2-1/2″ and 3″ are available for purchase separately).

Vibration has been reduced.

The rubber grip absorbs and reduces vibration, and it has a variety of other features. 3M Gripping Material provides a stronger grip and greater control while exerting less force.

The long-lasting composite cover extends all the way to the base, absorbing vibration and ensuring that tools remain in service by preventing cracked housings.

Safety features that have been improve.

The internal muffler protects the operator’s hearing and is not susceptible to breaking off.

Inadvertent speed changes are reduced thanks to the convenient thumb-controlled speed dial.

What are the benefits of using a Random Orbital Sander.

Random orbital sanders from 3M are ideal for sanding and surface preparation on a variety of substrates, including wood, metal, fiberglass and composite materials, and many others. These industrial-grade tools, also known as dual action (D/A) palm sanders, rotate the abrasive disc and disc pad in two simultaneous overlapping oval patterns so that no single abrasive particle follows the same path twice, resulting in a random scratch and swirl-free finish that is ready for painting or varnishing.

First and foremost, I have not been sponsored, given the tool, or compensated by 3M or anyone else in exchange for writing this review. I work in the auto restoration industry, so I put a lot of time and effort into sanding. I’ve never purchased a 3M sander before. I guess it’s because I’ve never seen their products described as “durable. I was completely wrong. I’ll go into more detail about the vacuuming capability because it’s the primary reason I purchased this sander, but first, let’s talk about the sander in general. Compared to nearly every other sander I’ve owned, this one is quieter, more comfortable, and more efficient. Having completed 8 hours of sanding and not feeling like I was vibrating on the way home was a welcome relief. Even with the vacuum hose attached, the tool is relatively lightweight. The paddle is simple to operate and comfortable to hold. The only nitpick I have is that the speed selection switch could use a little more ranch flavor. From speeds 1-3, there is only about an inch of movement available. Due to the fact that I purchased the more aggressive sander, I am usually sanding at full speed with this one. I would be extremely dissatisfied if I purchased the precision model and discovered that I couldn’t fine tune the speed. With this line of sanders, that is literally the only thing I believe 3M needs to improve upon.

The main reason I chose this particular model was because it could be connected to a vacuum cleaner. I was completely fed up with dusting. This is especially important when doing body work and painting in the same area at the same time. Before starting a paint job, I would have to clean up the body filler dust and 5 layers of paint dust, and then I would have to move all 6 cars out of the shop and blow/vacuum the shop before starting. To be completely honest, I did not have high hopes for this sander because most of the vacuum-capable sanders I’ve tried have fallen short of my expectations. I’ve bought everything from $30 vacuuming sanders to $500 tool truck sanders and have never been impressed with any of them. Until now, that is. Because of the cost-effectiveness of standard 6-inch sanding discs, I only use them occasionally. Consequently, I can only imagine how amazing the centurion 2 discs work, given their 52 hole configuration. If 3m wanted to send me some to try out, I wouldn’t say no to the offer. The ability to work in a vacuum is incredible. When sanding body filler with 60-80 grit paper, there is a small amount of dust on the sander and a small amount of dust on the floor. Especially with the type of sanding I do on automobiles, this is to be expected. Most impressive to me is how effective the sander is at cleaning when the sander is on its edge. Because automobiles have numerous edges, the sander is rarely completely flat. Most sanders produce more dust when they are flat than this one does when it is on an angle. After nearly 6 months, I finally got around to writing a review because I was convinced there would be something I didn’t like at some point. This is not the case. This product is absolutely incredible. If you’re thinking about it, just go ahead and do it. You will not be disappointed. This is especially true if, like me, you are accustomed to paying $300-$600 for sanders. This is far superior to any other sander I’ve ever used.
