The 3M Elite Non-Vacuum Random Orbital Sanders, which are loaded with features to reduce vibration and noise while also providing greater wrist support and operator comfort, were designed by 3M engineers to provide both performance and ergonomics in one package. The ergonomic rubber grip with 3M Gripping Material, curved-throttle alloy steel lever, and built-in wrist support allow for comfortable control, while the recessed lever platform eliminates pinch and pressure points on the operator’s palm while operating the machine. The speed control dial is conveniently located on the side of the vehicle and is operated with the thumb. With a composite cover that extends all the way to the base, the lighter-weight tool is able to absorb and reduce vibration while also preventing cracked housings, and the internal muffler helps to reduce noise and will not break off.

Designed for wood, metal prep for paint, fiberglass and composite materials, and a variety of other substrates, 3M Elite Non-Vacuum Random Orbital Sanders provide the best sanding and surface preparation results. These industrial-grade tools, also known as dual action (D/A) sanders, rotate the abrasive disc and disc pad in two simultaneous overlapping oval patterns so that no single abrasive particle follows the same path twice. This results in a swirl-free finish, even when sanding against the grain of the material being worked.

Pneumatic sanders, also known as air sanders, are powered by compressed air, which is supplied by an air compressor. This type of model is not connected to a vacuum system, and it is used in applications where dust extraction is not a consideration.

For the past 30 years, I’ve been the owner of custom woodworking businesses. I was just reminded that I had purchased two dozen Ingersoll Rand orbitals for the guys to use some 23 years ago, and I had forgotten about it. The guys began removing mine from my toolbox after a few years, so I began purchasing different models and eventually different brands. Every time I went to use my sander, there were some numb nuts who were using my new sander for the second time. As a result, I went through quite a few of them. This is the most recent one that I purchased. The thought occurred to me that I should take this one home and store it properly for when I needed a good tool. This is a very expensive orbital in today’s market for this amount of money. For this amount of money, you might as well get some Festool. This device has never worked properly for me since the day I purchased it, and the third time I used it, it just stopped working completely. When I was beating it with a hammer to get it to spin the last time, I took the filter out first, then the baffle. Of all the sanders I’ve ever used, this has been by far the worst piece of junk I’ve ever encountered. This thing is easily outclassed by a Black and Decker or even a $30 harbor freight. The 23-year-old Ingersoll Rand that hasn’t been stolen is still in use by the guys in the shop. Following the completion of this review, I intend to immediately contact Ingersoll Rand and place an order for a new Ingersoll Rand, and you should do the same. Do not waste your money on this nonsense. Whether I should crush it with my forklift or let an employee steal it and think they got away with it with a good sander is up in the air right now. With the hammer marks, it’s possible that they won’t. Let me be clear for the benefit of 3M’s response: a hammer has only appeared on my tools once in 30 years as a last resort, and I don’t want to hear the phrase “no wonder he used a hammer,” which is spoken in Goofy’s voice from Disney. I am looking forward to seeing 3M at the next machine show.
