Description of the Produc.
In order to provide the best dust extraction in environments where dust management is critical, 3M Vacuum Random Orbital Sanders are equipped with a self-generating vacuum. In high-production industrial environments, it provides professional performance and a swirl-free finish. Using the 3M clean sand system, you can completely eliminate dust from the workpiece and surrounding area, resulting in improved sanding performance. A venturi vacuum is created by using the incoming air to extract dust, which is then expelled through a large collection port into a HEPA-rated clean sanding filter bag that is included. An air filter contained within the bag effectively traps dust and holds it in place until it can be disposed of. Featuring speed control and a low-profile, balanced design, 3M pneumatic vacuum orbital sanders are engineered to maximize the performance of 3M abrasives on the job site. The 3/16″ diameter orbit provides a moderate cut rate and a fine finish on a variety of materials including metal, composites, wood, and others. This palm sander is jam-packed with features that reduce vibration and noise while simultaneously improving ergonomics and operator comfort and convenience. When you purchase this 6 inch random orbital sander, you will also receive a Hookit disc pad, which allows you to quickly and easily apply and re-apply hook and loop discs to the sanding tool. 3M SGV sanders are an integral part of the 3M Clean Sanding System, which is comprised of the SGV tool, Clean Sanding disc pad, and Clean Sanding disc, all of which are sold separately, as well as the Clean Sanding disc pad and disc. These components, when used together, are designed to effectively remove dust from the workpiece and the surrounding area. In order to extract dust from the work surface, the SGV sander uses the inlet air to create its own venturi vacuum, which is then exhausted through a large collection port on the back of the tool into a filter bag. The 3M Clean Sanding Filter Bag that comes with the tool achieves superior HEPA-rated dust collection thanks to an air filter inside the bag that locks dust away and effectively retains it until it can be disposed of by the user.
For optimum performance, a 3M Hookit Disc Pad has been included.
When used in conjunction with 3M disc pads and abrasives, 3M SGV sanders deliver the best results. The disc pads, which are specifically designed to optimize the performance of these tools, maximize dust extraction while minimizing vibration for a smooth operating experience. The 3M proprietary hole pattern reduces swarf in the middle of the pad and improves disc performance and life by increasing the number of holes in the pad. Convenience and versatility are provided by the 3M Hookit system, which allows for quick disc changeouts and the use of Scotch-Brite Surface Conditioning Discs in addition to coated abrasive Hookit discs for a variety of applications (both sold separately).
What are the benefits of using a 3M Random Orbital Sander.
This family of random orbital sanders is designed to optimize sanding and surface preparation on a variety of substrates, including wood, metal, fiberglass and composite materials, and many others. These industrial-grade tools, also known as dual action (D/A) palm sanders, rotate the abrasive disc and disc pad in two simultaneous overlapping oval patterns so that no single abrasive particle follows the same path twice, resulting in a random scratch and swirl-free finish that is ready for painting or varnishing.
This is the best sander I’ve ever used, and that includes Festool sanders. When I own a custom furniture business, I reserve the use of RO sanders for large or rough surfaces, and I hand sand the remaining surfaces. With a lot of large surface work, I purchased this in the hopes that it would be comparable to or better than Festool’s line of sanders. Besides being faster, it also produces a better surface while producing significantly less vibration.
I haven’t used Mirka or Dynabrade sanders, so I can’t make any comparisons between them.
Notes from the field.
Additionally, I switched to Arbnet sand paper at the same time, which may have contributed to the enhancement (I use the thin backing protectors since the paper is so thin.
-It is extremely lightweight and stable, making it possible to sand the edges fairly easily.
-Much less fatigue and vibration as compared to befor.
My horizontal 2 stage compressor, which is approximately 80+ gal, is powered by a 5 horsepower horizontal 2 stage motor, and this sander causes it to run longer than I anticipated. This is probably the smallest compressor I would recommend for use with this sander because of its small size.
-I was concerned about the high RPM on wood, but it turns out that both the paper and the wood stay cooler than any other sander I’ve used in the past.
-The dust filter bag performs admirably for the first 10 minutes, after which its efficiency begins to deteriorate. We connect ours to a shop vac and haven’t had a single particle of dust.
-This sander is likely 50% faster with a similar/better surface finish than the previous model.
