Although this is a nice 12 volt kit, it does have one flaw, which may only be a problem for some people. Purchased because I was in need of a battery and charger for my Skil 12V oscillating multi tool and this seemed like a reasonable way to get one. I was not disappointed. The Makita and Milwaukee systems are two other 12V systems that I use on a regular basis, so this is a comparison between the two.

Drill: This drill is significantly larger than both the Makita 12 brushless drill and the Milwaukee 12 brushless drill. This is the pièce de résistance of the set. When you look at the measurements, it doesn’t appear to be that much larger, but when you put them side by side on your bench, the difference is very noticeable. With regards to drilling pocket holes in dimensional lumber or hardwood, all three are capable of doing so with relative ease. They can use a forstner bit to drill 3/4-inch holes in plywood, pine, or MDF, or they can use a small whole saw to cut through the material. To me, the best ergonomics are provided by Makita, Skil, and Milwaukee (I dislike the slide style packs and what they do to grip size, and I typically wear size large gloves).

While this is an adequate 12-volt impact driver, I’m not convinced that a 12-volt impact driver is an especially useful tool for most applications. However, it does not have the power to drive large fasteners without first drilling a pilot hole, but it does provide a quick tool for driving a screw after you have already drilled the pilot hole. On either the Makita or the Milwaukee, the Halo light is preferable to the lights on the other tool.

Battery and Charger: These are quite possibly the best 12 volt battery and charger combination that I have ever used in any of my projects. The USB port on the battery, as well as the USB port on the charger, are both marginally useful features. While not unique, the battery gauge on the battery is preferable to having one built into the tool, as is the case with Milwaukee’s battery gauges on their tools. Finally, the jump charge feature comes in handy when you just need to get a job done quickly. However, this is precisely where the flaw in this kit is found. I’ve picked up a tool and taken it to the job site with only one battery on more than one occasion, only to realize that I’d forgotten to take the battery out of the other tool.
