In tight spaces where a regular hammer would be insufficient, the Estwing Mini Palm Nailer is the ideal solution for fastening small items together. The palm nailer, which uses a rapid hammering action to drive nails, saves your arm from having to use your hands all day to nail. The firing mechanism is activated by simply inserting a nail into the magnetic holder and pressing the palm nailer into the surface of your work surface. A hand driven nail in the range of 2″ to 4″ in diameter, measuring 6D-16D (.113″-.192″), is compatible with this nailer. This is my first experience with an Estwing pneumatic tool. I put the palm nailer through its paces with a Porter Cable pancake compressor that produced 150psi and held a 6 gallon capacity. The palm nailer has an 80-100 psi working pressure and can drive nails from 2″ to 4″ in diameter. My testing was carried out at 90psi with a variety of commonly used construction nails ranging in size from 3-1/2″ to 1″ inch in diameter. Several people have expressed dissatisfaction with the strike face’s size and the palm nailer’s tendency to stall when driving a nail. If you apply too much pressure, the nailer will stall. Simply refrain from pressing too hard and allow the tool to perform its function. The tool works perfectly well if you take a small step back. Despite the fact that the size of the strike face appears to be a little small, palm nailers are not intended to drive finish nails. People have expressed concern about nail heads slipping past the strike face and becoming stuck in the strike face. I’m not aware of any carpenters who use a palm nailer to drive finish nails in their projects. All of the full round head nails that I drove into the wood went in without a hitch. The depth of the drive is also effective. It is very simple to change from left to right. For the same price, I could have purchased a Senco or a Bostitch, but I wanted to try something different, and this small palm nailer proved to be a satisfactory choice.
