These diamond grit 4 inch pads are suitable for use on both stone and concrete, which is something I enjoy doing as a hobby. These will work dry, but the results are better if they are used wet, with a small amount of water to flush out any grinding waste. It is also safer to be wet in order to avoid inhaling stone or concrete dust. The water acts as a lubricant, which improves tool control as well as the overall performance. These will require a 4 inch rubber flexible hook backer (hook/loop = Velcro type) in order to function properly. I did notice that these are prepunched with a center hole, which allows for the use of an arbor washer on an angle grinder with a 4 1/2-inch cutting diameter.
These have distinct grit markings, with diamond grits of 30, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, and 3000 being offered as options. The backs are color coded, which is convenient. (See Illustration 1. When I use the fine 3000 grit, I will not get a “polish,” but rather a good surface that can be further finished if I so desire. I did notice that there are no maximum RPMs specified on the discs or in the listing – this is a significant oversight that the seller should address immediately. Even though these are small, I would put my trust in them at 8000 RPMs. However, a mention of maximum RPMs is standard information for rotating tools, and these do not include that information. These could also be used on a drill, but the results and control will be poor because the RPMs are too low for most drills. The best tool for the job is an angle grinder.
The joined hexagonal cells on the resin grit side of the pads (Picture 2), which accommodate flexion and use on a curved surface better than discrete separated grit segments, are my favorite feature of the pads. I have a set of these types of pads made by another manufacturer in which the grit is contained in discrete open resin blocks that will break off when the pad is used on a rough edge. These have a significantly better design and are much more durable.
