Sounds like you need a new compressor, the part that was smoking is the compressor clutch, only a few things can cause that: The system could be overcharged, but iif that were the case the compressor shouldn’t come on, there’s a safety; the solenoid that engages/disengages the clutch could be bad; the belt could be slipping very badly; or the compressor clutch is shot. I think you can replace just the clutch, but its a lot easier to replace the compressor, it only takes about a 1/2 hour, but you will have to discharge and recharge the system. Its a good idea to replace the line dryer anytime the system is opened, but it isn’t strictly necessary.
