Buy CRAFTSMAN Benchtop Planer, 15-Amp (CMEW320)

So I bought this at one of the big box home improvement stores, and I thought I’d write about it here.

This planer is pretty good and cheap. For $100 more, I could get the DeWalt. I was on the fence. At the end of the day, I’m not a professional woodworker, so I went with the craftsman instead. Then I don’t think I’ll be sorry. There are some nice things about the dewalt, like three blades and a depth of cut indicator (which isn’t the same as a thickness indicator). This is the only real thing I don’t like about it.

Tonight, I used the planer for the first time. I was milling some rough cut walnut down from about 5/8″ to 3/4″ long. The tables didn’t come level out of the box, and I had to take apart the middle table to get the blue plastic film off. It was easy to set up (A little annoying). Use a level and 4 bolts to make the outer tables level with the inner table on this planer. You should set it up on a level bench top. It took me a while, but it was easy enough.

People like that they can put the dust collector together with the chute facing either way. It’s also good because the dust collector works well. With my shop vac, the thing is almost free of dust. I was shocked by that.

Set up something to hold the end of the board as it comes out. If you don’t do this, there’s a little snipe in the last two inches. Snippets were mostly gone when I set up a piece of wood about level with the outfeed table on my planer. This is how it worked. The lunchbox planners I’ve seen do this a lot. if you set it up right from the start and have something ready to catch your piece as it comes out, this should not be a big deal.

It also leaves a very nice, smooth surface on the wood, which I was surprised to find. Even though it looks good right out of the planer, I’ll still have to sand it down a little.

If the Dewalt had better features and the set up was a little difficult at first, I did not give it a five star. Because the height adjustment handle on the dewalt has more movement in it than the one on the Bosch does (I tried both in the store, the dewalt has practically none). Overall, I think this is a great tool. I think it’s better than other things in the same price range.

People who are looking for planer knives should know that this planer is the same as a Porter Cable PC305TP, which has the same number of knives (Also a Stanley-Black and Decker product). Each of these knives is the same. But the knives don’t have a part number. It’s also a bad thing about the planer, because it takes a lot of time (Not publishing a part number for a consumable). That number is PC22562.
