I get 230v at the braided copper feeding the brushes when I turn it on. I don’t have much experience with bad brushes, but these look like they’re not worn down to nothing – except one of them has a spring loaded something poking through. I’ve not replaced many brushes before, and after suspecting that that spring thing shouldn’t be there, I did some reading online where people were saying that brushes going bad meant low power or jerky movement – but since I have no movement at all, I wondered if I was barking up the wrong tree.
Looks like a design fault with the brush holder, but it got mewondering as til now I’ve never had any brushes wear out at all. Embedded within each brush is plastic pin around 2mm diameter and a relatively strong spring The pin is released when the brush wears beyond a certain point, this lifts the brush from the commutator and stops the motor rather than the usual method of running until the brushes are worn away to nothing.
