I love Ken Onion’s Work Sharp. I bought it because I wanted to try making convex edges on my knives without risking them getting broken while I learned how to do it freehand, so I bought it. When I tried the Work Sharp for the first time, I used a brand new Ontario Knives Rat-1. This was an inexpensive, well-made knife with a pretty AUS-8 satin finished blade. In just a few minutes, I was able to make a razor-sharp, mirror-like edge. I also made a lot of ugly scratches on that pretty AUS-8 satin finish because the metal particles that come off the edge during sharpening build up on the angle guides. This makes the finish look bad. It hurts when you cut with the knife the way you were told. When I use my knives, I don’t really care if they get a little scratched. I just can’t see how sharpening them could damage them. So, why would you do that. A quick search on Blade Forums found that other people have had the same problem, especially with very polished finishes. After reading a little more, I decided to use painters tape to protect the blade of a different knife. In just a few minutes, you’ll have a perfectly sharp convex edge that isn’t scratched at all. People who use other sharpeners, like the Apex Edge Pro, actually tell you to use this method. Work Sharp should have done the same. However, if you want to try convex edges (they really are better), the Work Sharp is a great little machine for the price. I think it’s very important to read the instructions and tape the sides of your blades. Thanks for reading my review.
