Although I’ve used Kerosene and other products to clean cosmoline, I currently clean new machinery with LA’s Totally Awesome cleaner found at dollar stores. Personally I use wax on sliding surfaces and WD-40 on non sliding exposed parts.

Acetone works great, even gasoline- either one cheaper per ounce than WD-40, and likely work faster. When completely stripped, coat with WD-40, paste wax, whatever. Regardless, work in a well ventilated location, needless to say.

Despite initial skepticism, I would learn it not only sands wood very well, it, along with the custom-fit steel wool and abrasive pads that came with it, worked very well for cleaning my cast iron.

Finally wipe surface clean and coat with Johnsons paste wax.
