More info about how to replace a bandsaw motor

Back to the problem at hand: after pretty lengthy reselling session, my motor stopped working. If getting a replacement motor is an option my fellow Creekers think I should pursue, I would like to get the most powerful one I can that still runs on 110 current/volts or whatever the hell that is. I very much appreciate any advice and suggestions about what brand/model motor I should get in where I should look for it.

I did electric motor repair for 10 years professionally. Reason is, there’s a detergent in regular motor oil and stuff like WD-40, that’s the WORST stuff you can put in a motor with sleeve brg’s like that. Most of the time when the motor “Growls” or “Hums”, it’s because that start cap is bad, or there’s an open in the start winding.

Single phase motors are generally more expensive than a three phase and the expense of a decent VFD from China added to the new three phase wouldn’t be hugely more than the single phase motor. Exsisting stock sick motor is s single phase, hence the reason for asking if it’s worth converting it to a three phase. 9 I have never changed the speed on my band saw, only the saw blade itself.

The net improvement would be an increase in the load you can put on the motor before it would trip out on amps since the motor rpm and pulleys would stay the same. Depends entirely upon the saw and how the motor is mounted – however I doubt you can just swap in a standard motor as most of those smaller benchtop saws typically have a proprietary mounting arrangement directly to the back of the machine. As for what HP is needed, keep in mind that Delta recommended a 1/3hp motor for their 14″ saws for general use, and a 1/2hp motor if using the riser block or working with heavy timber.

It will have some sort of spring assembly that will close the switch when the motor is not rotating, but as the motor spins up the switch will “Click” open. Funny thing about is it that Delta sells a replacement motor for $155.09, more than the original purchase price of the saw. Word of caution on using a replacement motor, DO NOT use a motor from a dryer, washer, sump pump,or blower motor etc.

Where can I get a motor for the bandsaw? You need an induction motor. In USA, the best place to buy a new one is probably harbor freight.

Why is my bandsaw not working?

A bad power supply, broken power cord, failed on/off switch or bad drive motor can prevent the band saw from starting. Check the power supply first. Plug a shop light or other electrical tool into the electrical outlet that you’re using for the band saw to make sure the outlet works.

What RPM is a bandsaw?

Bandsaws always use 1725 rpm. The 3450 rpm are way too fast. From contributor R: Depending on the size of the wheels bandsaw blade speeds can vary between 2000 SFPM to over 4500 SFPM.

How much HP does a bandsaw need?

A 3/4 or 1 HP bandsaw is pefectly adequate for re-sawing stock at home….

Why does my bandsaw blade keeps coming off?

Blade Tension Is Too Loose The most common reason why the blade is slipping off is that there isn’t enough tension to keep it on. Blades can slowly become loose after years of wear and tear, and eventually, you’ll need to tighten or replace them.

Why does my bandsaw blade wander?

If the wheels are worn and do not have a distinct top to the crown then the blade will not know where to go, and may wander around. This of course can cause poor cut quality and difficulty in setting the guides.

How do I get my bandsaw to cut straight?

Band Saw: Why won’t my band saw cut straight? When the band saw cuts crooked, a dull blade, improper feeding, loose blade tension or not using a work piece guide could be the cause. Use the rip fence or miter gauge to guide the work piece uniformly through the cutting blade to make straight cuts.

How fast should a wood bandsaw run?

Bandsaw: Speeds. A common speed for the bandsaw is about one thousand feet per minute. Wood can effectively be cut at much higher speeds, up to and over five thousand feet per minute, but you should keep it slower because it’s safer.

What RPM should a metal bandsaw run?

You want the blade running at about 75 RPM for steel, 150 max. Any faster and you will work harden as you cut (due to heat build up) and fry your blade.

Can you use a metal bandsaw blade to cut wood?

What are the ideal conditions for cutting wood on a metal saw? While cutting wood on a metal bandsaw is perfectly fine, you should switch over to a 6TPI blade if you have the time or anticipate cutting a lot of wood.

What does a 14 inch bandsaw mean?

Rob Johnstone: Band saw sizes are derived from the diameter of the wheels in the saw. So a 14-inch band saw will have wheels that are 14-inches in diameter. There is another measure that indicates how wide a board you can resaw.

What is throat depth on a bandsaw?

The throat is the distance from the blade to the vertical frame section of the body of the saw. This distance determines the width of cut that can be completed on the band saw. The throat on a free-standing cabinet band saw typically exceeds the 12 to 14-inch throat of smaller, bench-top models.

How high can a bandsaw cut?

The resaw capacity is the maximum height (thickness) that can be cut. For the small shop furniture maker, go with 14″ as the minimum for a bandsaw, though 16″ is better. Those doing larger work might even want 18″ or 20″ machines. Just make sure you have a minimum resaw height of 12″ for versatility.

How tight should a sawmill blade be?

For carbon steel toothed blades (cutting blades) this is typically 15,000 to 25,000 PSI. Slitting type blades typically are tensioned in the range of 12,000 to 20,000 PSI. In general bandsaw blades are never tensioned past 35,000 psi.

How do you maintain a bandsaw blade?

You can help keep your bandsaw in the best condition by following a daily cleaning and lubricating routine, including lightly oiling the bearings where possible, and using an airline to blow away any swarf that has built up in the blade and mechanism.
