Stihl MS361, 460 & 200T, Jonsered 490, Jonsereds 90, Husky 350 & 142, Homelite XL and Super XL. I’m having all sorts of problems with this saw, and not sure why or what exactly is wrong, I just had my local saw shop guy, who’s really good, put a carb kit in it on friday, and he started it right up for my wife when she had it into him, she got it home and we fueled it up and tried to start it, after about fourty pulls and about to give up it started and ran good for about ten minutes. Before buying my latest saw, the 460, my stihl shop guy, loaned me a dolmar saw, about the same size as the 460, that was the nicest starting, best balanced, great power to weight ratio, and the auto oiler put out enough oil to do an excellent job of oiling. My entire crew fell in love with it, the only problem I had with it, was if I bought it, no bars or parts were inter changeable with my existing saws, the sole reason I bought another stihl saw.

Turn the LA screw one-quarter turn counterclockwise. Adjust the idle screw after starting the saw and letting it warm up for about five minutes. Turn the “I”or “LA” screw clockwise until the chain starts to turn, then back it off 1/4 turn.

how to adjust stihl chainsaw idle Related Question:

What is the H and L on a carburetor?

They are typically labeled L (low speed jet), H (high speed jet), and I (idler jet).

What does H and La mean on a Stihl chainsaw?

One marked “H”, for high speed, one marked “L”, for low speed and one marked “LA”, which is your low speed air adjustment for idle.

Why does my Stihl chainsaw not idle?

The two most common reasons a chainsaw won’t idle are a blocked air filter and an idle screw out of adjustment. Other possible causes include: Dirty Air Filter. Idle Screw out of Adjustment.

Why does my chainsaw idle fast?

The most probable – and easiest to fix – cause of chain rotation while the chainsaw engine idles is a poorly adjusted idle setting on the carburetor. The result is that too much fuel is delivered to the combustion chamber when the throttle is released, and the engine doesn’t really slow.

Why does my chainsaw not stay running?

Your chainsaw’s engine needs the right supply of air to run properly. A clogged air filter can be the reason why your chainsaw won’t start or stay running. Find your chainsaw’s air filter and remove it. If it’s clogged or too dirty, wash it or replace it.

Why does my chainsaw keep bogging down?

Many chainsaw operators first notice a problem with chainsaws bogging down when they’re using the chainsaw under load, and this is usually the result of poor air circulation. This issue is caused by a clogged air filter on the chainsaw. Remove the air filter from the chainsaw.

Where is the idle screw on a Stihl chainsaw?

The LA setting on Stihl chainsaws is controlled by a screw on the outer housing of the engine that adjusts the flow of fuel and air through the carburetor. This screw is inside the engine housing on the carburetor, but is accessible through a hole or gap in the outer housing of the saw.

Why does my Stihl saw keep stopping?

The carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is often caused by leaving fuel in the chainsaw for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the chainsaw engine to stall.

How do you adjust H and L screws on a carburetor?

Set the idle speed screw(not L or H) so it is just able to idle by itself. This screw will have a “stop” it rests against. Now turn the L screw out until in decreases in rpm and then back in(very slowly) until it is at peak rpm. Adjust the H screw once more as above and it should be a very serviceable 2 stroke.

How do I adjust the idle speed?

Turn the idle screw, now exposed from the protective rubber coating, in order to adjust the idle. Loosen the screw in a counter-clockwise fashion to increase idle speed or tighten it in a clockwise manner in order to decrease the idle speed.

How do you keep a Stihl chainsaw running?

If the saw stalls while it’s idling, adjusting the idle screw, which usually is marked LA, should help. If the saw is stalling when you pull the throttle trigger or it doesn’t reach its full power, adjust the high-speed (H) screw.

Why does my chainsaw dies when I give it throttle?

If the filter becomes clogged, not enough fuel will reach the engine for it to run properly. Because your chainsaw will idle, but dies when it is revved up to full power, it means that the filter is only partially clogged; it will allow enough fuel to the engine to run on idle, but not enough to sustain full throttle.

What happens when you run straight gas in a chainsaw?

If straight gas is used, it can damage and ruin the piston and crankcase within a minute, as the gas doesn’t take long to burn out these sensitive parts. Drain the tank immediately into a separate fuel container.

Why does my Stihl chainsaw bog down when I give it gas?

The Job of the Carburetor One controls the fuel mixture when the engine is idling, one controls it when the engine is operating at low speed and one is for high-speed fuel control. When the saw bogs down during cutting, it’s usually the high-speed screw you need to adjust.

Why does my chainsaw rev too high?

The throttle valve (butterfly) simply cuts off the supply of combustible air/fuel and the engine stops. If this adjustment is set too high, the high idle speed will cause the centrifugal clutch to engage and the chain will run. This is a dangerous condition and should never be allowed.
