For money, I bought this instead of Granberg Mark IV. I didn’t have a lot of work to do, so I thought this would be enough. Aluminum and steel are what the ad says it’s made of, so it must be good. Well, that’s only half the truth. The rails are made of aluminum that has been shaped into a single piece. These things are made of steel. That doesn’t mean they don’t work together. The cross member is made of chrome plated white metal.
All three trees were about 6′ long. People were shocked when the first thing that broke was the guide bar skid. Before I finished the first log, it broke off and I had to start over. Annoying, but I weld it back on and it worked out just fine. Tack welds that keep it in place are very small. During the process of tightening the cross member bolts at the new depth, the cross member split right in the middle of its V shape. I was not overtightening, but just tight enough to keep it from moving around. This makes the whole thing pointless. Because it’s made of white metal, it can’t be weld. In the end, I gave it back and bought the more expensive Granberg one, which is much better made, to finish the job.
A lot of other people didn’t like that there weren’t clear instructions for how to put the thing together. This didn’t bother me. You can see the picture on the box to figure out how to put it together. It isn’t hard to do. Anyone who has any mechanical skills should be able to figure it out quickly.
