Version 3018 Pro with Offline Controller can be upgraded. This is a great cnc router machine for beginners because it has a small size, a USB port, and GRBL control systems. You don’t need to connect the computer to this machine to use it. The offline controller had an SD card reader so that G-code files or NC files could be written to the root directory of the SD card. It lets you move the X, Y, and Z axes manually, and you can open or close the spindle by hand.

Not if you don’t know what you’re getting into.

I’ll let you off the hook if you take your time, show some forethought, and pay attention to the small details. This will turn out to be a very sturdy and powerful little machine. Understand that it is small, with a work area that is only about 6 square feet “It is x12″x2. How big is one low shoe. Understand, too, that the CAM used to control it from your PC might not work. There aren’t many cheap or free options out there, and the most popular is Candle(BRBL) 1.1.7.. which doesn’t work on any computer I own (and I own a LOT of computers). In second place is LinuxCNC, which also won’t run on any Linux machine I own. I’m playing around with UGS, and it looks like it could be good. You can also use almost any CAM to make gcode and transfer it to the CNC router with a MicroSD card, and then use the small “offline controller” to make it work, which is what makes it work.

You should know that the “offline controller” is very small, so you should be aware of that. In your mind, it should be bigger. Only about 1 inch wide “the shape is diagonal and it’s only a little bigger than a deck of cards. You can use a Fresnel lens to make the screen bigger, though. Later, you can add a much bigger offline controller.

You’ll find that this little machine really needs to be changed in many ways. You’ll want to change the solid motor-to-screw couplings to flexible ones as soon as possible, and you’ll also want to change the linear bearings to polymer ones. You’ll also need to add two limit switches to each axis. You should think about replacing the spindle motor with a bigger one, like 500W, which will require a bigger spindle mount to fit. You might also want a taller Z axis gantry and spindle carrier system, but that’s not as important as the rest.

It’s a good deal for what it does. In other words, it’s not an easy-to-use machine that anyone can use. Make your life easier: You might be able to run Candle (or something like it). Just don’t expect anything. All in all, it’s not too pricey.

Does it bother me that I bought one. No. If I do this, I’ll have a lot of time to play around with things. I’d rather have bought this than a ready-made machine that costs ten times as much.
