When I first gave it a bad review, I didn’t realize it was out of alignment until I mounted it to my workbench and noticed it. After making the necessary adjustments, I can rewrite my review as follows. I’ve used many of these shear/brakes over the years while teaching jewelry and metals in various educational settings, and they’ve cost four times as much as this one. I teach art at a high school, where I teach jewelry and metals, and I am on a tight budget, so when I saw this one, I had to have it. To be completely honest, I didn’t expect too much for $169, but I was pleasantly surprised by what I got. Because it bends (brakes) so well, it is accurate and shears the metal as described. Soft metals such as sterling silver, copper, and aluminum are the only ones that can be used. It is limited to very thin metal — 20 gauge and below — but it is also limited to the most expensive metals. It is a good shear to use in a school because students have a tendency to push equipment to its limits, and if it is damaged, I would rather have spent $169 on a shear than $1000 on a different one.
