On paper, I thought this set represented excellent value for the money. In practice, based on my observations, these tools are much better suited for tasks that require less effort.
When pushed to their limits, both the impact and hammer drills become extremely hot. While drilling a small hole into the steel of a trailer for an anchor point, the hammer drill failed with a puff of smoke. It gave me more confidence to use the 14.4v ni-cad black and decker drill. It is extremely disappointing that both will become so hot that you will feel it in the handle.
I didn’t take advantage of Makita’s warranty, which is still active, because I didn’t have confidence in it, even if it was brand new. I don’t use the tools on a regular basis, perhaps once a month or less frequently. Makita’s brushless tools appear to be performing significantly better than their predecessors, restoring my faith in the company.
The reciprocating saw is in good working order. Most modern cars do not have full adjustments, as most older cars do. In addition, the rubber becomes diztorted and gets in the way of the blade being inserted. It’s a little irritating.
Yes, lighting is inexpensive because it is standard in basic sets.
So I now just use the impact driver as a powered screwdriver in the house and keep the brushless drills in the garage.
Coming from 24v Ridgid li-ion tools, the batteries were bad, the tools and batteries were larger and heavier, and the tool line never expanded as they claimed it would. The tools, on the other hand, were extremely dependable and of higher quality than the items included in this set.
The batteries and the wide range of tools available with the Makita set are two of the set’s advantages. When at all possible, use the batteries in conjunction with brushless tools.
