While you’re at it, make sure to clean the flue as well as possible. Especially if it has been sitting for a long period of time without being used. Bugs like to build their nests in there and clog the chimney. Consequently, the refer does not cool down properly, and the exhaust has a slightly sweet odor to it. The use of an old bicycle brake cable to clean the flue has proven to be very effective for me. Simply snake it up from the bottom, above the burner, and run it in and out of the flue, clearing any debris that may have accumulated there. Expect to need to insert approximately 2 feet of cable into the flue in order to clear the entire length of the flue.
