I felt a little silly for purchasing an automatic hammer (visions of the Simpsons flashed through my head), but I found myself in a situation where I needed to drive a bunch of nails into a 2×10 that was being used to sister some damaged joists, so I did it. Due to the limited amount of space between the joists, a reliable swing was impossible to achieve, and to further complicate matters, there was a copper water pipe smack dab in the middle of it all. As a result, I’ve arrived.

I must admit, it’s a pretty nifty piece of equipment. The only issue is that it is incapable of driving 16d nails reliably. If you run into a knot or any other type of resistance, the hammering simply stops. I’m assuming the force is restricted in some way. So I was able to get approximately 75% of my nails in, and the remaining 25% was completed with screws (which is not great due to sheer load ratings but whatchagonnado).

I don’t think I’ll ever use this for anything other than driving small nails, though.
