All battery-powered tools must be replaced at least once every few years due to planned obsolescence on the part of the manufacturers, who limit the availability of compatible replacement batteries for their previous models in order to keep their products competitive. Because this is true for even the “top of the line” brands, it is pointless to spend excessive amounts of money on them because the batteries degrade long before the tools themselves become obsolete.

As a result, I’ve made it a habit to look for more affordable brands, and I’ve discovered that it’s usually less expensive to buy two of the most recent battery tool combo-packs than it is to buy one pack and order an additional battery separately (so as to have one battery in use and one charging, during long projects). You can also compensate for potentially less durable components by having an extra tool and charger ready to go in the event that something goes wrong. This Wesco driver requires a second 20V battery, which costs nearly $10 more than the tool plus battery and charger.

Of course, buying too cheaply can have negative consequences, but this is not the case here. Out of the dozens of drill drivers I’ve owned, this is the most compact, light, and powerful, and the battery life so far has been excellent. I’m hoping to be able to find another model that is even half as good when these batts fail. Overall, this is a fantastic deal.

Battery availability has been manipulated by higher-priced tool companies, putting the old adage “you get what you pay for” to the test by playing games with customers. Don’t give them any encouragement.
