More info about atlas 912 bandsaw blade length

I have several saws and can never remember the blade length or thickness. Something which hasn’t been mentioned is that I tend to think of the blade at the larger adjustment. Woodworking blades don’t break often but still, I’d have dimensioned the riser block so that a standard blade would fit at 80% of the tension adjustment, leaving an inch or two for scarfing and silver-soldering a broken blade.

Here’s a view of the upper blade guide, I took one of the guide blocks out to measure it. I’ve already researched getting a Timber Wolf blade for this, based on the reviews here, so I’ll look to get that in the near future as well. The recommended blade size is 3/8″, and the blade length is 82″.

It didn’t come with a blade. It’s an Atlas/Power King 12″ that takes an 82″ blade. Same 3/8″ 3 tpi for green, but you want a blade with more set, since when cutting green wood, you’re heating up the wet parts, which expand and will close your kerf in a heartbeat if you can’t clear the sawdust. Suffolk Machinery doesn’t offer an alternate set blade in anything shorter than 91″ because a 12” diameter wheel puts too much stress on the thicker blade.

Bandsaw blades differ in thickness, width, length, and tooth configuration. TPI is the number of teeth the blade has per inch. If you’re looking to cut wood or other soft materials, you’ll need a blade with a TPI of 6 up to 20. For harder materials like metal, a TPI between 14 up to 36 is more suitable. The number of teeth can be found on the blade.
