Okay, so the product description is terrible, but the pictures are pretty close to the truth. There are no acrylic or plexiglass parts, which is not what the description said. Mini t-track base and seats are made of aluminum, as are the rest of the set. There is no company logo on the covers (beige, no paint). They are made of metal that has been colored. The only things made of plastic are the switch, the plug, and the power source.

The total length of the whole thing is 12 “A little over 2.5″ (about 2 5/8″) in height and just over 2.25″ (about 2 5/16″). It has a small t-slot track and base, so normal t-slot tracks and bolts won’t work (size or spacing).

Wood and other materials can be turned up to 2 1/4″ to 2 1/2” in diameter (70mm). In general, smaller-sized pieces are easier to work with. The maximum length of wood or other material that can be clamped by the lathe is about 5 inches. If you turn the tailstock around and let it hang off the end of the base, the lathe can handle about 7 inches of material (note the screws may or may not reduce the maximum turning diameter in this configuration).

There was only one way I could think of to make this lathe bigger (optional). I bought a second lathe and cut off some of the track from that one. I left around 4.25 “track that is now under the second motor, which is now a small grinder with a disc wheel attached. In order to make sure everything was as straight as possible, the lathe was bolted to a piece of wood. The three-jaw drill chuck can hold about 1/4 of a drill bit ” (6mm). When you buy this chuck, it comes with a screw drive (mandrel) that spins the wood or other material. It looks like the mandrels used with Dremel’s polishing wheels. I bought two Plum Blossom thimble drill bit lathe drives from China (eBay) that work even better than the little screw drive.

The speed of the motor can be changed by a small switch on the 110/240v power source. There are seven power steps: 12/15/16/18/19/20/24v. The speed range is from 4000-8000 RPM. Because this lathe works like a Dremel tool, which makes small cuts at high speed, I don’t think it’s necessary to use a dimmer switch or something else to make it even slower.

Before you start turning, the wood or other material should be as round as you can get it to be before you do anything. If you’re working with square material, cutting off the corners after you’ve marked the center at each end will save time and lessen the risk of tool kickback, which can be dangerous. Before you start, make sure the wood or other material is level at each end.

Angle aluminum should be placed as close to the turning material as possible to reduce tool kickback and make the cuts more smooth. Turn the tool support around if it’s possible. When I made that tool support, I made the screw slot a little deeper so that it could be moved a little more freely. Eventually, I may make a wider, more adjustable tool support. I don’t like this tool support.

The best way to carve is to make small slices or nibbles instead of pushing the tool/chisel blade into the wood/material. It also works like a Dremel tool (little nibbles at high speed, not sheer motor horsepower). Wood and plastic materials that aren’t very hard or soft usually don’t need very fast speeds. Harder wood and soft metals usually need faster speeds.

The set of chisels that comes with the game isn’t very good. They do work, but not very well. I like the Harbor Freight “Wood Carving Set” (item #98195), but there are a lot of small tools that work well with this lathe. Make sure your blades are sharp and stay that way while you work. Keep the chisels in place. Keep an eye out for kickback when you use chisels with curved shafts. If you want to work with metal, you’ll need chisels for metal.

The second cover, which isn’t over the motor, is for small circular saw-style blades. This makes the lathe into a small table saw. With the right mandrel and the right blade, which aren’t included, the drill chuck can hold the blade. The slot in the cover of that drill chuck fits over the blade. The material you’re cutting rides on top of the cover and is cut by the blade that’s out. Take care. There is nothing to protect your hands and fingers from that very sharp, very fast-spinning blade.

That should be enough to get going. Before you try anything important, practice on scraps first. This little lathe can do a lot of different things. Check out some YouTube videos for ideas. I use mine mostly to make small wood or plastic fishing lures, plugs, and floats that can’t be made on a bigger lathe.
