My guess with the recommendations by ARB has to with performance/longevity of their compressor. The equal length of lines likely has to do with the pressure switch, and the shorter line may cause the comp, to shut off when before the longer line has enough psi(min. The extra length of the front line could be easily used up by running over to the opposite side of the compressor in the engine bay before dropping it down to the locker, or simply coiling it up in a corner of the engine bay.
