More info about cast iron vs aluminum bandsaw wheels

It may be that cast iron wheels do add to saw performance. It’s hard to see why the makers of higher end band saws and re saws would bother with cast iron if it didn’t add something. One effect of cast wheels might well be to by their much greater mass tune out resonances like this, and maybe other modes of vibration too.

I have done some searching of reviews and news groups and see thatpeople recommend cast iron wheels over cast aluminum. Honestly I think from my experience that the cast iron vs cast aluminum will be hard to pinpoint. A well designed saw with aluminum wheels will out perform a poorly designed saw with cast iron wheels.

Under powered for resawing and only a 6″ resaw capability. A good cast iron heavy frame and wheels with upgraded guides. I’ve considered a 3HP Laguna saw but really want to keep the cost under $1,000 and don’t care much about the throat capacity as it will be dedicated to resawing.

G0513X2 has cast iron fence with aluminum resaw fence; G0513ANV has an aluminum fence. To summarize the G0513ANV is going to be a great saw outside of the fence BUT if you are going to upgrade the fence then you may as well buy the X2 with the other upgrades for the minimal cost bump. Again, I think the Grizzly saws are great but IMO the Rikon is better and costs about the same $$$. The only downer I have on the Rikon is again the OEM fence isn’t great… the fence is slightly better than the G0513ANV but much worse than the X2. I actually have the nicer Grizzly fence on my Rikon 10-345!

What type of saws do sawmills use?

Sawmills are traditionally large stationary band saws or circular saws with dedicated frames designed to guide logs to the blade in order to cut smooth, flat, even boards. However, these days you can find various styles of sawmills designed to be portable for milling lumber in the field.
