A special feature of Clayton backup pads is that they are designed specifically for vacuum sanding. When the pad is used on a self-generating sander or a sander that is connected to a vacuum source, the large number of holes allows for an enormous amount of airflow to pass through. Abrasive is held slightly off-surface by the J-Hook backing, which creates microchannels for dust to migrate through the abrasive, through the hooks, and to the nearest vacuum hole. The hook backing is compatible with conventional hook and loop abrasives; however, for the best dust collection, Mirka Abranet, Clayton DustMaster Supreme, or 3M Clean Sanding discs should be utilized. When used with 6″ sanders from Clayton, 3M, Mirka, Dynabrade and other manufacturers with a 5/16 inch threaded mounting stud, this pad is balanced to provide optimal performance. Abrasion resistance is provided by this pad, which is standard issue for the US Navy’s Corrosion Control program. 12,000 revolutions per minute is the maximum speed.
Although less expensive than original equipment, I believe it performs just as well. I had used the original pad and was in need of a replacement; this product met all of my requirements. This is a decent alternative to the original, and I would buy it again.
