More info about cut off wheel vs band saw

My intent was to us the saw to cut out blades and then put saw and table away when not in use. Good decision, I use that little saw for so many things. Cutting pins, trimming handle materials, cutting bolster material, opening steel packages from Aldo and the list goes on and on.

An angle grinder is a hand-held power tool used for cutting. Many different types of cutting wheel can be mounted on an angle grinder but they’re all essentially grinding wheels. Our vertical bandsaw is used more for cutting shapes than cutting to length.

I have almost everything, 4 by 6 bandsaw, portaband, portaband on a stand, angle grinder with a thin cutting wheel usually fitted, another angle grinder with a regular abrasive wheel usually fitted, a dremel usually fitted with a cutting disc, an abrasive disc chop saw use of a circular saw if Ineed to cut Aluminium sheet, and a bench mounted shear for thinner stuff. This 100yr old machine will virtually silently cut its way through anything within its capacity and turn itself off once the job is done. It is fairly, though not perfectly accurate ( Within 15 thous in 4 inches depth of cut.

Looking for a saw to cut exact 90º and 45º angles in tube steel. I value accuracy and build quality the most when looking for tools, so I’d prefer not to get something that’s going to be consistently off by half a degree like my previous miter saw. I only have experience with upright band saws for cutting wood so I’m not even really sure what I’m looking at when I see one of the metal-dedicated band saws.

Short chopping cuts will cut faster, cooler and more accurate than a steady down pressure on the abrasive blade. My chop saw is just setting collect dust, but I will drag it out to make fast cuts in angle iron. I use the band saw on round stock and thick flatbar, and large angle iron, and the torch or plasma cutter for flat plate or anything to heavy or big to fit on the other tools.

Plasma has its place, super on light materials, salvage sheet, etc Ain’t nuthin free, consumables are not bad, last a long time. I would want a torch too for auto work, would personally find it about impossible to do without one. I have all of them, cut off, sawzall, rarely use band saw, plasma, chop saw, torch about daily and a few wheels on cut off grinder for intricate type work or when other methods just wont do.

If you are making things that can be completely cut before assembly, the bandsaw is good. Then while it’s cutting, mark the next set of pieces to be cut. The bandsaw seems to leave less cleanup of the cut before assembly also, except for what is mentioned below.
