First of all, this model is not the high-speed corded “drywall” screw gun that people who work with drywall all day would use (most have went to cordless drivers, anyway). This DW276 is Dewalt’s most versatile screw gun. It can go from 0 to 2500 rpm, has a positive clutch, and has 132 in-lbs of torque at 6.5 amps. This gives it a lot of power for its job. A corded screw gun that only works with drywall is the Dewalt DW272. It can go from 0 to 3500 revolutions per minute and it has 81 in-lbs of torque and 6.3 amps of power. If you want to use it only for drywall, the Dewalt DW255 or DW272 are the right tools.
However, we have owned several of these DW276’s and used them for work, and all of them are still running if they haven’t been dropped 10 stories. They need regular maintenance like cleaning and re-greasing the drive gears, replacing brushes before they damage the motor, replacing broken cords, and so on. The more you push, the more torque is applied by the positive clutch, which isn’t adjustable like some other screw guns that require you to manually change the clutch setting, or a drill/screw gun with a variable clutch until it’s locked to drill. This is a very versatile screw gun. You need to let the clutch do its job instead of using it like a drill. This way, you can apply more or less torque, and you don’t strip the screw heads like a straight drill does, like when you drill.
This one will still drive drywall screws, but not as quickly as the two that are made for drywall with less torque. We remove the drywall head that allows us to adjust the depth of the wall. Instead, we use magnetic bit holders. If we needed to change the depth, like when we were hanging drywall, it screws back on.
