It took me about 70 pocket holes, and about 70 pocket plugs, to build a shelf. Plugs made of Red Oak wood were used this time. To make the Red Oak plugs more flush, I did not cut the plugs down ahead of time. Instead, I cut the Dremel cutting guide in my “Dremel 565 Multi-Purpose Cut Kit” so I could approach them and used a 194 bit raised to about 1/32 inches from the surface. Cutting guide: As long as the guide was held flush to the wood, it made mince meat out of the plug. This way, the bit doesn’t make a lot of smoke. It’s made to be able to cut only in one direction (although if you force it you can cut in the other direction and create a lot of smoke in the process).
As soon as I ground (routed) one plug down, I could use the multi-tool sander to sand off any extra and then use wood filler as needed.
If you don’t pay attention, the saw can cut into the wood next to it. Keep the cutting guide level with the surface so this router/grinder works better and is more stable. In order to make the pocket plug flush with the piece of wood, I added more wood to both sides and clamped it to the wood.
In this case, the router bit I used saved me a lot of time. Now that I changed my drywall cutting guide, it was time to buy a new one, like this one.
