The LATERAL TNSN SYSTEM is 9-1/4 inches wide. The International Residential Code (IRC) says that decks must be able to handle both vertical and lateral loads. There is a new 2015 code that lets you attach a tension tie to a deck joist and then attach it to a sill plate, wall plate, or stud from the outside. Each of these lateral connections must be made strong enough to hold 750 pounds in tension, and they must be installed in four places along the length of the ledger: one at each end of the ledger, and two more evenly spaced in between. There is a complete system called the FastenMaster Lateral Tension System (LTS) that can be used to transfer the lateral forces on an outside deck when it is attached to the wood frame of a building.
