I saw on YouTube that a lot of people now use the cold cut saw to make things. I thought it would be worth it to get one and maybe get rid of my band saw. In fab shops for more than 20 years, I’ve used a lot of different types of abrasive cutting wheels and bandsaws. I know how to run them at the right pressure to get the most life and efficiency out of blades.

The price of this cold cut saw is less than a good band saw, so that’s a good thing. However, the blades cost more than $100 each, compared to just $30 for my band saw blades. We mostly use the cold cut saw to miter cut 2x2x1/8 “Tubes.

First 10 or 15 cuts are great. The blades start to die off very quickly. If you’re cutting wood, you should always use the same amount of steady pressure with any saw blade, no matter how light or heavy.

After about 25-30 cuts, we have to really crank down on the saw because it doesn’t go anywhere at the start of the cut. The blade just spins on top of the tube and makes a red hot spot in the metal.

The blades start to warp because of the heat from the hot spot. When the top of the tube is cut, the vertical sections go quickly, but the saw blade on the bottom of the tube starts to get hot more quickly.

At this point, the motor starts to smell like it’s about to overheat.

Pressure from the spinning blade on the tube causes it to move closer to the blade. This pushes the tube closer to the blade until it’s actually cutting a bigger hole in that part of the blade. This is what happens.

If you want to try to keep the tube in place, the crank handle has to be tightened so much that it can throw the fence out of place if it isn’t cranked down very hard.

Even if you tighten the crank all the way to the point where it feels like it’s breaking, the crank moves by itself because of the vibration of the saw. Then the tube is free because the crank is moving.

Also, the saw didn’t start out flat. Always had to use a shim to make it level.

If the blades didn’t die so quickly, it wouldn’t take so much force to move the saw blade through the cut.

These are not burr-free cuts, either. Any round DOM tubing always leaves a burr on the bottom, even if the blade is brand new. For the first few cuts, the square tubing is completely free of burrs. Then, the burrs get bigger and more difficult to remove. So this is most likely false or misleading advertising, and I’ll post photos of my own.

All in all, I don’t think I should have bought this saw. It would cost me almost $5,000 a year if I could only make 50 cuts with each blade. I would spend less than $150 a year on band saw blades.
