This machine performed significantly below my expectations. It became immediately apparent when I received the machine and started working on it that there was a noticeable grinding (metal on metal) noise in the headstock area. I contacted Grizzly customer service, and they promptly shipped out a couple of quill bearings for me to replace. They were not the same as the ones that were in the quill when they were received. However, it appears that only the machine has been updated and not the manual. Even the support representative lacked an up-to-date manual. In addition, there was a lot of sand left over from the casting process in the interior of the quill area. Due to the fact that I was unable to replace the bearings, Grizzly agreed to swap the headstock. I returned it to Grizzly, and they determined that they would not swap the headstock, but would instead replace only the quill. When I got it back up and running, it was just as noisy as before. This time, however, I returned the entire machine to Grizzly. Despite the fact that they agreed it was noisy, they felt it was quieter than the majority of their other units. They came to the conclusion that adding another rubber shim to the quill would help to reduce some of the noise. They also replaced the motor that had failed as well as the chuck that had been discovered to be defective. As soon as I got it back home and tried to run it again, it was worse than it had been before. The noise produced by this machine was unbearable for me, and so I returned it.

The service representatives at Grizzly were pleasant and courteous, but they were unable to overcome a malfunctioning machine. Despite the fact that the runout on this machine appeared to be significant to the naked eye, I never measured it because I was so frustrated with the noise issue at the time. My other Grizzly products are excellent, but there appears to be a serious problem with this drill press, especially considering that they claimed that my unit was quieter than the majority of their competitors’ units.
