In order to reload, you need the Frankford Arsenal Universal Precision Case Trimmer. This tool is simple to use and important for reloading. To make sure that the trimmer fits well and doesn’t get in the way, it comes with a depth micrometer and a brass shaving port. The drill press or hand drill can use this tool. The Universal Collet System indexes on the shoulder of the case, and both the collets and collars fit in the case that comes with it.
Cheap, soft steel makes the blade dull. It takes more than 20 seconds to cut a single case of 223 out of the box. This can be replaced with an RCBS carbide cutter, which is a good thing. Next, the roller bearings are loose on the shaft, which lets brass shavings get inside of them, so they can’t move. This makes the whole thing shake and feel a little rough when cutting. However, this can be fixed. Remove the retaining ring, then pull out the shaft. Remove the cutting tool (lefty loosy). To get rid of the roller bearings, slide them off. A lot of grease should be put on the bearings and the shaft after they’ve been cleaned. Use grease, not oil. Reassemble. There is no more jerking when it turns now. I think it’s best to use it upside down, like in a drill press, to keep brass shavings out of the bearings. After I cleaned this, even with a dull blade, I was still able to consistently get +-0.0005 across all of the cases I tried. Because the shaft moves too much, even with grease, cutting will be very different. The secret is to put your finger on the bottom of the case. In your finger, the case will spin because of the friction from the cutter. This is how it will work. If it’s done, loosen your finger so you can see. If the case doesn’t spin on your finger even with very little pressure, then it’s been cut all the way through. If you want to use a carbide cutter, you have to pay $30 extra.
