More info about how to clean chainsaw gas cap vent

I have a chraftsman 42cc 18 inch chainsaw, I know it’s a throw away! I also own many stihl chainsaws aswell. Tore the saw apart put new fuel lines and a carb on it, I tuned it and it runs great for a while then fuel leans out and starves the carb I notice it will idle down and not bog WOT when I pull the fuel cap off. So I was thinking, I have left over fuel vents from other stihl builds.

In order to maintain the functionality and integrity of the fuel cap and its venting, you will need to clean the cap from time to time. Right underneath the gas cap, there is a rubber gasket that is designed to create an airtight seal between the gas cap and the base of the fuel filler neck. Stopping after the clicking noise not only ensures that the cap has secured properly, it also gives you a natural stopping point when tightening the gas cap on your lawnmower.

I think the saw is an ’04 and I am trying to find the gas tank vent. I just got the saw and the few times I have run it, it has been hard starting, but once started it runs and idles and once run starts easily. As the day was ending I was cutting a few stumps down to ground level when it started to struggle to stay running and evidently quit and I could never get it to restart.

Does a chainsaw gas cap have a vent?

The gas cap on a Poulan chainsaw covers the tank and keeps gas from spilling while you cut. It is also designed to vent excess heated gases to keep the right amount of pressure, which allows the fuel to be pumped into the carburetor via the fuel line.

Why are gas caps vented?

The vented gas cap is designed to vent small amounts of air into the car gas tank line. The vented gas cap has a one-way release valve that is pressure-activated. When the pressure reaches a certain point (defined by so many pounds per square inch) the valve opens by a very small amount, relieving some of the pressure.

In many circumstances, the problem that causes a gas cap to be stuck is caused by one of three things: A mechanical defect in the gas cap. User error on installing the gas cap. A mechanical defect in the gas tank filler neck.

Why is my chainsaw building pressure in gas tank?

If the saw is working hard the fuel will heat up and, along with the vibrations it will vaporise, causing the pressure build up. It has been mild today, but if you are using fresh fuel it will be winter grade and therefore vaporise much too readily. Even more so if it’s a high ethanol content fuel from a supermarket.
