More info about how to remove air compressor pulley

Pulleys are essential components of any air compressor, as they are attached to the motor and play a critical role in sending pressurised air to the nearby tank. The jaws of the bearing puller will fit snugly around the pulley and in the majority of cases, the entire piece will simply slide off of the shaft by depressing the bearings. Depending upon the model of the pulley wheel, there may be more than one Allen screw present.

I never did get any replies to this post, but should someone stumble accross it, I found out that the compressor on the passat is a Sanden SD7V16 with a six groove pulley. I’ve found the compressor with clutch on the web and EBay, new, for around $180. – $225. The clutch is removed with a special puller, $35.00. I still don’t know if the puller will do the job with the compressor in place, but I’ll find out and post the answer.

So the bearing to my a/c compressor has some sand in it and it makes a horrible noise that i think is loud and annoying. Is the pulley simply stuck due to sand or does it come off at all.

how to remove air compressor pulley Related Question:

Can you change the pulley on air conditioner compressor?

Yes you can just replace the clutch pulley on the a/c compressor. The issue that you may have is the pulley bearing seized up and may have spun on the front of the compressor nose cone and will damage it.

Is the AC pulley supposed to spin?

Yes the compressor pulley should spin at all times. If it did not then you would have a toasted belt. When the compressor engauges it uses a magnetic clutch mechanism which allows the compressor to pressurize the freon.

What is AC pulley?

What is an AC Bypass Pulley? An AC bypass pulley is a free spinning pulley used to replace the AC compressor on an automotive engine. When the AC compressor goes bad in a vehicle, a consumer often will choose to install an AC bypass pulley. Once installed the vehicle will no longer have air conditioning.

How do you free up a locked AC compressor?

Another trick which can be used on single-phase compressors is to reverse the start and run leads of the compressor and momentarily energize the compressor. This may also help to free the piston. Only do this for a few seconds and then switch both the run and start leads back to their original position.

Why is my AC clutch not engaging?

One of the reasons why compressors do not engage is because of a low pressure lockout, a poor ground, a bad clutch coil, an opening in the wire to the clutch coil, or simply a blown fuse. There are several ways A/C compressor clutches receive power.

Should I replace AC clutch or compressor?

The primary reason to replace an entire A/C compressor and clutch assembly is for better long-term reliability. The AC clutch pulley might be what needs replacement, but it’s likely to have done some damage to the compressor on its way out.

How do you remove a tensioner pulley assembly?

Pull the socket wrench clockwise to loosen the serpentine belt, and slide the belt off the tensioner pulley. Let the tensioner move back into position. Unbolt the belt tensioner assembly from the motor with a socket wrench. Remove the assembly from the engine compartment.

Are idler pulley and tensioner pulley the same?

The primary distinction between tensioners and idler pulleys is the presence of an adjustable bolt. Tensioners are positioned on the bolt through mounting. Idler pulleys are not mounted to an adjustable bolt. However, the differences between idler pulleys and tensioners also extend to purpose.

Should the AC compressor pulley spin all the time?

At all times, the compressor pulley should spin. If it did not, you would have a new belt. The magnetic clutch mechanism allows the compressor to pressurize the freon when it engauges.

How do I stop my AC clutch from spinning?

You just hold the handle to prevent the clutch from spinning.

Should AC compressor always spin?

If you mean the air conditioning compressor clutch, it should only be spinning when it is electrically engaged such as when the selector switch is set to air conditioning or defrost. If it is staying engaged then there is a cross circuit or it is locked up.
