A few hours into the five-hour story I was sick of hearing anyone say anything – except for Nick, Juliet’s boyfriend. Juliet uses pom-poms, a chainsaw, a gigantic gun, and sometimes the head of her boyfriend on the end of a leash to kill zombies. Juliet’s basic moves – tied to a couple attacks and a dodge function – don’t flow together until late in the game when she’s unlocked basic combos we’d expect to have from the start.
Not because I necessarily dislike the game, and not because I foresee it becoming the center of yet another trite videogame review controversy. Above all, the game is just too enjoyable to play once, so as far as I am concerned, this is at least a ten hour game, as opposed to five. As a game, it is a celebration of the arcade era, an era when games felt free to be outrageous without worrying about being taken seriously or making even the vaguest lick of sense.
You play as the sucker-loving Juliet, who, like the rest of her family, happens to be a zombie hunter. Later, a high school classmate, saved from a zombie attack, happily calls out that he’ll pleasure himself to thoughts of Juliet that night; elsewhere, a zombie-fied football player growls that he’ll-well-let’s just say the activity involves Juliet’s noggin lodged somewhere you don’t expect a noggin to comfortably fit. Exchanges between Nick and Juliet about his head-only state also tend to be hysterical, because they contrast Nick’s mournful attitude about the loss of his body with Juliet’s perpetual optimism.
WHY: Slicing up zombies with a chainsaw is incredibly fun, and you get to experience endearingly stupid humor fighting in boss battles. Fighting zombies is never dull, because there’s always a new combination of attacks that you haven’t tried out, or a new particularly fickle zombie that needs a different attack approach. You can’t always pause the game, only a few cutscenes are skippable, and you can’t save the game mid-zone.
