The J-2500 15″ Floor Drill Press comes with a 3/4HP motor and a tilting table that can be moved. The J-2500 is both simple and powerful. It has a cast iron head and a large quill, which makes it easier to be more precise with your work.
After it was put together, the drill press worked fine for the first time.
Switching it back on again, the motor ran for some time but didn’t move at all. Then, after about five seconds, it turned the power off. Jet customer service helped me for a while, but then I gave up and emailed them. Unfortunately, Jet doesn’t seem to be able to help me very much over email, so I had to call during business hours, wait on hold for a while, and talk to a person. Rep: “Try a bigger circuit breaker, buddy.” I did more research and opened the motor case to find the problem: a little nub on the rotor casting was causing the centrifugal switch to stay open, so the start winding could not start after the first operation.
As long as you don’t mind some of the machining and workmanship on the table surface, the drill press works well enough. The transmission design, on the other hand, makes it hard to keep the vibration down.
At the end of the day, it was kind of fun to learn how AC induction motors work, so I’m not really upset about this. Jet needs to improve their quality control, and they should have better customer support and service policies because of how hard it is to return a machine this big and how much they charge over other importers.
