15 years ago, I was injured while using a table saw, and it forever altered the course of my life. By using a SawStop cabinet saw, I was able to overcome my apprehension about table saws. When I first started looking at saws, I had the impression that I had gotten over my fear and could use a standard saw. I looked at contractor saws on Craigslist and in classified ads and came close to purchasing one 10 – 20 times, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. It was then that I looked myself in the mirror and said, “Stop being cheap when your life is on the line..
Reclaimed wood is used extensively in my cutting work. Pallets, plastered studs, and anything else that is available for free if you pull the nails out are all fair game. I was concerned about damaging blades and brakes as a result of metal-on-metal contact. Don’t be concerned about that, or about wet wood, if you are. It is an exaggerated source of concern. I’ve cut through nails more than 20 times by accident and have yet to set off a brake as a result. I’ve also had the saw stop because of a high moisture content, but that doesn’t cause the brake to engage either. Make no mistake about it, if you put a body part in there it will go off. You should not be concerned about ruining your Forrest Woodworker II or having to replace a brake after running through a nail, because this is not the case.
Purchase a SawStop and put an end to your excuses.
I will say, however, that everyone is correct in their assessment that the slot running miter gauge is laughable.:-)
