I was looking at the Festool linear sander and was dismayed to see that it was going to cost $415. I discovered that Festool was charging $30-45 per profile, which I thought was outrageous. As a result, the total cost was $600.
For approximately $320, I purchased a compressor, this air tool, 14 profiles, hose and accessories to keep the compressor in good working order, and sandpaper to get started.
Finishing coves and profiles is now as simple as buttering a piece of toast. Even though their paper is strong (Karebac is the equipment division of Sun Gold abrasives), they could improve the strength of the profiles.
All it took was one phone call to Customer Service, a few photos of my prematurely worn profiles, and priority mail delivered tougher replacements by the following weekend.
Three pointers.
Wearing gloves will help to distribute the shaking in your arms, and you will run out of compressed sir before you have to put it down completely.
Don’t press too hard because the majority of the cutting is done with only a small portion of the profile, which will damage the area you use the most. Allow the paper and tool to do the heavy lifting.
Thin strips of paper should be cut from the paper. You will discover which parts of the profile you use on a particular piece, so you can save money and paper by converting the half-inch “cutting edge” of the profile to a two-inch “cutting edge” instead. Don’t bother covering the entire Velcro with paper that will be thrown away when the “edge” burns out.
