An even better tool than the dust port that comes with it from Makita is this one: (more on that below). Negative reviews seem to come from people who bought Japanese-branded clothing at a lower price because they thought it was a good deal. They should be ignored. The one sold by Amazon costs $229. Keep scrolling down until you see it (not “fulfilled by Amazon”). A manual in English will come with it.
It won’t fit anything that is US-sized in the dust port. Makita, of course, meant for it to be used with their own dust extractor, which I’m sure is great, but my Shop Vac is just as good, and I’m not going to switch. I have complained to Makita USA many times over the last 10 years, but there has been no response.
Getting the Shop Vac 906-87-01 universal tool adapter is the best way to get around this. It is made of rubber-like plastic, and it fits very well because it is very small and thin. The small end of the adapter will fit snugly into the dust port. The middle part will fit the 1-1/4 inch adapter “End of the Shop-Vac hos. Slice off the rest with a hack saw. Thus, the tool works as clean as you would expect a sander to work (i.e. there is some dust on the surface, but very little is airborne).
During this time, you might also want to remove the pin and cover. They don’t do anything useful. An envelope should be sent to Makita USA, 14930 Northam St., La Mirada, CA 90638. Put those things in the envelope and mail it (with an expletive of your choice).
I also took down the useless handle arm. Pushing the nose with the handle makes the front pulley move a little bit. This makes the belt move around a little bit. To get a good grip on a motor, just put your other hand on top of the motor housing. You don’t need a handle or a handle arm to get a good grip. This time, look at the front pulley. If you push too hard, the belt will try to slide.
Last but not least, the manual doesn’t say that you can change how tight the front pulley is by twisting the large nut that holds the spring and pulley arm together. To look at the pictures, click on them and look.
