The sander does a good job and doesn’t make as much noise as I thought it would. The job was good. It was a good idea for the clamps to be made. Has enough strength.

However, I bought this sander because I needed to be able to clean up the dust (indoor floor sanding in the occupied living area). The dust collector that came with the sander did not work well enough for the job.

A strange thing about the dust exhaust pipe on the sander, too: It’s very small. As far as diameter goes, it’s about 7/8 of an inch lon. A standard 3 gallon Shop-Vac brand hose will not work with this adapter. It also doesn’t work with any adapters I’ve ever seen. I already had adapters from other projects. None of them even came close. Web and hardware stores didn’t have anything that would fit.

You can’t make any changes to the frame that holds the dust collector bag that came with the sander. You can’t hook up a vacuum hose to it in any way. Totally not going to work.

There must be a vacuum connection to collect dust, but Makita doesn’t seem to know this. Harbor-Freight and others have found this out, but Makita doesn’t. No, it wouldn’t be good for them to sell their own special dust bags.

Why did I not return the sander, even though I was very annoyed with it.

I made a gasket out of electrical tape to make the OD of the Makita dust exhaust pipe bigger. A hard plastic adapter (about 1 3/8″ female OD to 1 1/4″ male OD) was used. I cut the male end so it would fit over the “tape-gasket” connection and flex. Then, with the help of a hose clamp, he tightened the adapter over the ‘tape-gasket’ on the end of the dust pipe. Finally, I added more tape to the male 1 1/4″ hose fitting so it would fit snugly into the 1 3/8″ female end of the adapter, making sure it didn’t move around.

Finally, I could use the sander. I hooked it up to my Shop-Vac, and it worked well.
