The 5″ Ridgid I’ve had for years was starting to make metal grinding noises, so I needed a new one. I’ve had about seven different disc/sheet sanders from Black and Decker and Ridgid over the last 15 years. I needed a new 5” orbital. Another 5 would have been nice “However, it had a few flaws: It was too big to hold, there was no pistol grip with a trigger switch, and it didn’t have an on/off switch. So I looked at a few more brands at the big box stores. This is what I found. Welcome to this Makita, and have fun.

About $20 more for this Makita, but it comes with a pistol grip with a trigger switch and a second hand grip that you can use.

It is a lot more comfortable to use than any of my orbital palm sanders, which I don’t like very much. During long periods of use, you can switch between the knob, top, and pistol grip to give your hands a break. You can also use two hands or just one.

It’s also easier to use above the shoulders and overhead because it’s lighter weight, which makes it easier to move.

The soft start and stop, as well as the trigger switch, are great. Some other sanders leave high-speed circular gouge marks. This one doesn’t leave those marks.

It does a good job of getting dust into its little bag.

The shop vac port is small and the adapter is rubbery, but it doesn’t seem to have enough depth to hold on to the shop vac hose better. Every few minutes, I have to put the hose back in place.

In my opinion, it should be changed so that it has a bigger tube and a shop vac adapter that goes deeper into the wall.

You’d also want it to have a small vacuum shroud around it, like the Ridgid 2611, so you don’t have to worry about getting dusty when you connect it to a shop vac.

This is a great tool, but it doesn’t pick up very much dust or connect to a shop vac very well. I love it and plan on using it for years.
