Because regular framing hammers would not only dimple too far into the nail, but they would also leave a hole big enough for a man to walk through if you missed the framing behind it. For a long time, when we were hanging sheetrock, we all had sheetrock hammers with us. As long as you worked for TOH and your name was Norm, you couldn’t get a drywall gun.
You had to be a good operator to get the screws to the right depth because there were no stops on the drills. It was also hard to get the little wire metal edges that were on the outside of the screws out with a needle and tweezers because magnetic driver tips were still being worked on.
There aren’t any of those things anymore. isn’t it wonderful how technology has changed our lives. You don’t have to curse like a sailor when you ruin a sheet of paper with this. It does everything you need it to do.
