The new 70 lb. AVT Breaker Hammer (model HM1812) is designed to hit like an air hammer, but with less noise and vibration than an air hammer does. A powerful 15 AMP motor generates 53.9 ft.lbs. (73.8 Joules) of impact energy, ensuring that contractors receive hard-hitting performance on the job. Users also benefit from less noise and vibration than when using an air hammer, as well as the lack of hassle associated with an air hose and compressor. It is equipped with the most recent Advanced AVT Technology, which is a three-component system that is synchronized to reduce vibration even more effectively. In order to reduce vibration during concrete breaking applications, the internal mechanical counterbalance system, vibration-absorbing housing, and fixed movement handles have all been designed.

Electric jackhammers are used on a daily basis by my crews. I’ve owned at least a dozen of the old-style Makita breakers over the years and have always been satisfied with their performance. We typically get two years out of them, which is excellent considering how frequently they are used.

When I heard about this new hammer, I was immediately sold on its increased power and reduced vibrations. Following the purchase, the unit appeared to be of high quality. After a month of use, the guys began to express dissatisfaction, claiming that it was not hitting hard enough. After a few more uses, it will be completely defunct.

When I contacted Makita, they instructed me to take it to a local authorized service center for repair. The service center informed me that virtually every electrical component in the vehicle was damaged and would require replacement. It’s a little disappointing for a “new and improved” unit, but it’s possible we received a faulty unit. At the very least, it is covered by the warranty.

Today, I receive a phone call from the service center, informing me that the parts will not be available until the end of August. Not only am I under the gun during the busiest season, but this leads me to believe there is a widespread problem, which explains the lack of parts availability.

If you are able to locate the older units, I would recommend that you purchase them. This new one is a complete failure, so it’s back to Hilti for me.
