Description of the Produc.

This Setup Bar is 3/16″ in diameter. If you’re using a table saw, router table, or shaper, it’s critical that you set your tool to the exact height that is required for the job. With their exclusive 3-Gauge design, the Precision Setup Bars are ideally suited for a wide range of different applications. The concave step on the bottom of each setup bar allows you to precisely adjust the height of your router bit or saw blade by straddling the blade. It is possible to use the step on the top edge of each Setup Bar as a gauge to check the depth of your completed cuts. The step at the end of each Setup Bar can be used to adjust the distance between a table saw blade and the fence, or the distance between a router bit and the fence, depending on the application. Each individual Precision Setup Bar is made of soft aluminum, which is intended to prevent damage to your router bit or saw blade if they come into contact with each other during the setting up process.

Information on the Makita Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series, which has an 18-Volt capacity.

Makita, a pioneer in the cordless tool revolution, changed the game with its breakthrough 18-Volt LXT lithium-ion cordless series, which set a new standard for the industry. Five years after its introduction, Makita’s LXT series has grown from seven to more than thirty-five tools, offering a diverse range of cordless solutions for professional tradesmen and craftspeople. Makita also added 18-volt compact lithium-ion for cordless power in a more compact size.

There are several advantages to Makita’s 18-volt lithium-ion batteries and ENERGY STAR-rated Optimum Charging system when compared to older battery technology. Comparing Makita’s 18-volt lithium-ion batteries to traditional 18-volt NiCad batteries, the lithium-ion batteries weigh 40 percent less, have a longer run time, and have a five-fold lower self-discharge rate, which helps to keep cells active and ready to use at all times. Makita’s 18-volt lithium-ion battery has a cycle life of 2,000 cycles, which is two and a half times longer than the cycle life of a NiCad battery. As an added bonus, the battery is protected by integrated shock-absorbing features. Additionally, sixteen firm-holding contact terminals deliver consistent high power.

An integrated memory chip in the battery communicates with the Optimum Charger to ensure that the battery is charged as efficiently as possible, thereby extending the battery’s useful life. Additionally, Makita’s Optimum Charger is quick: it can charge an 18-volt LXT lithium-ion battery in just 30 minutes and an 18-volt compact lithium-ion battery in only 15 minutes, respectively. Additionally, Makita offers a Rapid Automotive Charger for use with 18-volt LXT and 18-volt compact lithium-ion batteries. This charger connects to the 12-volt DC sockets found in the majority of automobiles and trucks, allowing for greater mobility.

I purchased a Makita 1/2″ compact drill kit about two years ago and have been pleased with it. It has a long battery life and provides strong performance. Because I’m a homeowner and only use the drill infrequently, I keep one battery in the drill and one in the charger (did this for 20 yrs with my old DeWalt with NiCad batteries). Then, within a week of each other earlier this year, both batteries died unexpectedly. I must have missed all of the reviews about the charger’s faulty design as well as all of the reports of failed batteries. I’ve become a victim as well. Called Makita Service Center, and they wouldn’t admit anything other than that you shouldn’t leave a battery in the charger for more than a couple of hours at a time. I inquired as to whether or not there was anything in the manual regarding this, and he admitted that there wasn’t. We’re not sure how we’re supposed to find out. Silence. The gentleman informed me that if I mailed the batteries to him, he might be able to replace one of them. So far, I haven’t gotten around to it. I’d still have to shell out $100 or more for another one. You must have a minimum of two.

It appears that there is a deal on Amazon with 2 batteries for $127, but I can get a DeWalt or Bosch drill and batteries for about $50 more, and there is no risk of the batteries failing, so I think I’ll go with that. I’m never going to buy anything made by Makita again, and I’d advise anyone else to follow my lead. There are far too many excellent alternatives available that do not contain the flaw.

WARNING: BUYER BEWARE.

UPDATE: I finally got around to returning both batteries to the service center, along with a letter that essentially retold the entire story. Two new batteries were delivered to my door a week later. I don’t have a note or a letter, but I do have a functional drill once more. And it IS a very good drill, with batteries that charge quickly and last a long time. There is only one requirement: batteries should not be left in the charger for more than 24 hours.

The fact that Makita stepped up and replaced the batteries is something for which I must give him credit where credit is due. Many businesses would have chosen not to respond. It continues to puzzle me why they haven’t launched some sort of public awareness campaign to alert consumers to the problem. If they’re replacing batteries at such a high rate across the board, it has to be costing them a fortune.
