The kit comes with two 12V max CXT Lithium-Ion slide-style batteries that are better for balance and ergonomics than pod-style batteries. They also have an LED charge level indicator that is on the battery itself, making them even easier to use. When it has a 12V max CXT 2.0Ah battery, the SH02R1 weighs only 3.5 pounds. I wanted to give this book five stars, but I didn’t have enough money. This is clearly a great tool. These things are small, light, and very useful. I don’t understand why so many people say this saw won’t cut things or is too weak. Powered by batteries, this saw has a 3-3/8 inch blade. The smaller, lighter, and less powerful saws aren’t as good. It won’t be able to cut as quickly or with as much force as a corded 7-1/4 inch or bigger saw. I’ve used it a few times to cut and rip some 3/4-inch common wood, and I like it. It takes more time than a big corded saw, but it does the job with less noise and less hassle than a bigger saw (cords and sawdust spray..
Because of this, I’m giving it four stars. There are two optional extras that the manual makes clear: a rip fence and an optional vacuum attachment or “dust nozzle. In fact, the manual doesn’t tell you how to get these extras or what the part numbers are, so you don’t know how to get them. The website for the manufacturer is also useless. I had to look up things on the Internet. It doesn’t seem to be like with other tools and other companies. When the company’s customer service department opened on Monday, I called them to ask for help. Extra thumb screws were found and sent with the rip fence and the saw. There’s a good reason why the rip fence doesn’t come with screws. The rip fence is compatible with different saws, which means different screws for each job. Keep that screw in mind when you call for help. The saw’s rip fence and thumb screw work well together. This is the number for the rip fence: 164095-8. This is the number for the thumb screw: 265756-4.
In the next part, we will talk about the vacuum. I was on hold for about 10 minutes when I got the bad news. The support technician told me that I couldn’t get the part here in the United States. Seriously. If I ask him for the part number, he can’t give me one because it isn’t sold in the United States. Asked how I could get one, he came up with the best answer: Call the Canada help line. In the end, the Canada lead did not work out at all. In the instruction manual, there is a picture of a machine that looks like this. Finally, I found something on eBay from Finland, so I bought it and will get it soon. Part number 452237-9) arrived three weeks later, and it’s the right part. There is no screw, but I’m not surprised. An M4 x 16.70 pitch Phillips pan head machine screw with an M4 lock washer is all that’s left to do.
You can’t buy the vacuum attachment here because it has a 2.12 cm outside diameter and a 1.75 cm inside. It doesn’t work with anything I can find that fits this size of attachment. I’ll make something out of a 1.25-inch reducer at some point, but I’m done with this report.
Bottom line: Makita makes a great saw, but the documentation people made a little mess. A few minutes of editing would solve all of this, and I’d have saved a few hours of research and phone calls by not having to do that. This “optional accessory” is shown in a section of the manual that I included. It’s on page 9 of the English section of the manual. People wonder who makes a hose that connects so easily at both ends.
Epilog. This time, I ordered a set of vacuum accessories from Amazon called the Multi-Fit Wet Dry Vacuum Accessories VT1215 Vacuum Micro Cleaning Kit. I also went to the hardware store and bought some 1/2 inch vinyl tubing. It came with a 1.25-inch adapter and six feet of vinyl tubing, so I used them. Fits over the end of the reducer that hasn’t been changed and into the top of the Makita vacuum attachment. In this case, we can get as much tubing to make room for the saw as we need. Get the braided vinyl tubing because it doesn’t get bent when the vacuum is on.
Finally, if you don’t want to use your shop vac and you have a foreign-made vacuum like an Miele or Bosch, you will need a 35 mm to 1.25 inch converter. You can get one like this from EZ SPARES.
