Makita has an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion cordless cut-out saw that can help you make straighter, more accurate cuts in vertical and overhead jobs (model XDS01Z, tool only). It’s meant to cut holes in already-installed boards, like drywall and plywood, and it can cut 984 feet of 12″ drywall on a single charge with a 4.0Ah battery (sold separately). It has a short stroke length of 1/8″ and a blade depth that can be adjusted up to 1-3/16″ (9/16” in wood). This helps to keep things behind the board from getting hurt. For better dust extraction, the XDS01Z has a dust port with a clear dust box so that you can see more. It’s great for cutting things out of drywall and fixing things that have been broken.
We used this for the first time today when we had to remove Sheetrock to make room for a new soffit. Remodeling is a great use for this tool. It makes quick work of cutting, you can adjust the blade to not go through the paper backing, and you don’t need a drop cloth because the vacuum attachment works so well that you don’t even need a drop cloth to clean up after you finish. We were able to get 90% of the Sheetrock off with very little mess. That’s not true. The blade is in the middle of the machine. It can’t get any closer than about 1 1/2 inches from any edge, so we had to cut the last pieces by hand or with a Fein saw. Both of these things make a mess. After about 4 feet, the first nail broke a half-tooth. Ten times we did this, and the blades didn’t get messed up. If you want to make very precise cuts, you won’t be able to see through the clear plastic guard because the light doesn’t shine down there, and the plastic gets covered in drywall dust. The light is good for illuminating the V groove at the front of the saw. If you can only have this or a Fein saw, you’ll have to choose the Fein saw. For the cuts you can make with this tool, it’s great. You’ll also need to keep your Rotozip in order to cut circles, so keep that in mind. Keep it for when you can use it. If Makita had put the blade on one side or in front of the tool, it would have been a lot more useful. I’m giving this three stars because I will keep it for when I can use this. It doesn’t come with any blades. You’ll also need to buy the Makita 192108 hose, which fits the tool a little loosely and kept falling off until we wrapped it through the handle. It also fits the hose of our Festool vacuum, so we didn’t need any adapters or tape.
