You can use the Makita Plunge Base Set (196094-2) with Makita’s 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless model XTR01Z and their 11/4 HP Corded model, RT0701C. It’s a good accessory for both of these small routers. The Plunge Base has a plunge capacity range of 0 in. to 1-3/8 in. This makes it easy to get into the work piece. In order to be even more precise, the fine depth adjustment has three pre-set depth stops. For more versatility, the Makita Plunge Base can be used with standard template guides from the industry.
The Makita XTR01Z 18V LXT Brushless Compact Router is a cordless version of the Makita RT0701CX3 1-1/4 hp compact router. It has a brushless motor instead of a traditional motor. In fact, the bases, dust collectors, and other accessories for both power tools can be used with each other.

You can keep your hands and workpiece safe by having separate lock/unlock and power buttons so that the router doesn’t accidentally start, which could slash the workpiece and your fingers at the same time. It has a lot of great features, but the depth adjustment is a pain because the depth release lever must be in a certain position (just partially open) to allow movement in small increments. If the lever is fully open, the motor assembly will fall down to the base, or the base will fall down to the motor if it is inverted. Because there is nothing to keep the depth setting where it was when you let go of the lever, it takes a lot of trial-and-error to get a deeper or more precise depth. Some type of braking or resistance mechanism should have been used to keep the depth release lever in its open position when making small adjustments. At the very least, a small spring would have helped keep the depth release lever in its open position when making small adjustments. There are many different types of mortises that need to be cut. If you need to cut mortises for door hinges or strike plates, for example, a Ridgid R8604B 18V Cordless Brushless 1/4” Compact Router with its threaded rod depth adjustment would be the best tool “quickly and easily, but it doesn’t have all of the power and refinement of the Makita, which is why it’s not as good as it is.
Another minor complaint is that the bottom opening in the base isn’t big enough for a guide bushing (Porter-Cable type) lock nut if it’s set up that way. This only happens when you use a template or other offset routing method that needs a guide bushing.
In the end, the Makita XTR01Z has a great set of features, and if you can live with the awkward depth adjustment and a few other minor flaws, it could be the best cordless router on the market today.
